The build-up to the first time you have sex is huge, especially in popular culture. And so, it’s quite natural for a lot of misconceptions to arise about sex, protection, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and even pregnancy. People from every gender have questions they want answers to, and trepidations about being so intimate with someone.
While having sex, you might breathe heavily and sweat, and your skin could become flushed. These changes are caused by the physical nature of sex. During sex, your vulva may also become swollen due to increased blood flow. After sex, your body will go back to normal, just like it would after exercise.
Most women are born with a hymen, which is a membrane in the vagina that can stretch or tear during exercise, first-time sex, or other activities. During your first time having sex, your hymen might stretch, and you may experience some bleeding if it ruptures. However, bleeding doesn’t always occur during first-time sex. Many people have already inadvertently broken their hymen before they ever have sex. If you’re worried about bleeding, lying down on a dark-colored towel or cloth can prevent stains.
Wear clothes that are, umm, easy to take off?
Struggling to take those super tight jeans off? There goes all that excitement you both had just built up thanks to all that foreplay. While, obviously, sex is often a spontaneous act that you can't really prepare for, when you do know you're going to be engaging in sexual intercourse, make it easier for both you and your partner by wearing something that's easy to take off. It'll just make the whole process a lot smoother.
Stimulate your brain.
For women especially, sex begins in the mind. “The brain is a more powerful sexual organ than genitalia, because it’s where sex drive stems from, so reading erotica or visually imagining sex play will do wonders to heighten senses in preparation for sex,” Rodgers said.
You can pepper imagination sessions throughout your day in the hours leading up to sex ? and don’t forget foreplay once you’re finally together.
Do one thing that makes you feel sexier.
Feeling sexy and desirable to our partner is a key component that contributes to sexual enjoyment, said Murray. “So before sex, do something that makes you feel a little sexier and confident,” she suggested. Maybe that’s having a shower, wearing some underwear you feel confident in or listening to a sensual song. “Something that makes you feel more attractive will put you in a more sexual headspace.”
