Why Does FC Barcelona And AC Milan Have The English Flag On Their Badge
FC Barcelona and AC Milan have at least three things in common, they are a very successful team, they are a very rich team, and they have a weird looking English Flag on their team's crest.
FC Barcelona:
Their is a lot of of history surrounding the Barcelona team crest. At the top right corner is the color of the Catalonia, this colors of the red stripes on a yellow background is said to have originated from the actions of the Count of Barcelona on the battlefield. The stricken leader ran four bloodied fingers down his yellow shield and it later became the flag of the Catalonian.
The bottom section of their crest is the colors of the Blue and Maroon stripes and the logo of a football. It's a reference to their sporting identity
At the top corner of their crest sits a red cross on w white field which is a color associated with national flag of England. The cross is a Saint George cross. Saint George is the Patriot saint of Catalonia, just as he is the Patriot saint of England, Germany, Portugal, and Georgia. If you don't know Saint George, He is famous for slaying a Dragon. Legend says that he saved a King's daughter from a dragon. He said to have done so in exchange for baptism but he was later executed because he refused to renounce the Christian religion.
AC Milan:
Take a look at the AC Milan logo and you will see a red cross sign. Most people assume it's the club's flag.
The club was founded by an English man, Herbert Kilpin, in 1899 after he was rejected by Nottingham forest and Norts County. Herbert designed the club's famous teams. According to the AC Milan official website, Herbert said "we will be a team of devil's. Our colors will be red like fire and black to invoke fear in our opponents." The logo identifies that it was founded by an English man.
Their is also more to the story of the cross because it's also the symbol of Milan and it's Patriot, Ambrose Milano. Saint Ambrose was the bishop of Milan and he wowed the citizens of Milan with his dazzling musical skills.
The club claims the logo has left a mark on the people. "Since it's first appearance in 1160, the cross has been linked to Milan. The red represents nobility. The white represents the people - there was a unity between them in this emblem."
After the club was formed it succumbed to infighting of whether to sign foreign players, things got so tensed that a breakaway team was formed, enter Internazionale also known as Inter Milan. Milan became the team of the working men while Inter became the club of the elite. This action formed the rivalry between the clubs.
The red cross logo has become a sign of peace and it has become very associated with England, but did you know this flag actually originated from Italy? Well that's a story for another day, like and follow for more interesting posts.
