Commercial Transport Operators in the nation would not be permitted to operate if they do not belong to a union, according to Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), David Osafo Adonteng.

He added that this direction will be a watershed moment in maintaining road safety and sanity.

"Unions have a lot of responsibility, and every commercial transport operator, whether they like it or not, must join one." "Union drivers are always cautious and follow all road and traffic norms," he said.

He believes that if all drivers are members of transportation unions, all cars on the road will be roadworthy and only licensed drivers would be allowed to drive.

These unions will also ensure that drivers get the rest they need, reducing weariness and reducing road accidents. These are the rules that drivers must follow, and any driver who acts carelessly on the road will be dealt with harshly."

He highlighted concerns about reckless driving and overtaking on Ghana's mostly single-lane highways, calling it "poor conduct from drivers," which he hopes to address with the unionization of all drivers.

Over the years, road traffic accidents have been identified as one of the leading causes of death in the country, and the Police MTTU, in collaboration with officials from the National Road Safety Authority, has been organizing educational programs to raise awareness among private and commercial drivers about the importance of following the rules.

Follow the rules of the road.

The MTTU and its colleagues also bombard the media with statistics on traffic accidents every year, not only to depict a bleak picture of innocent lives lost on the roadways, but also to generate the necessary attention for the key stakeholders to implement laws and programs to reverse the trend.

However, rather than providing the MTTU with the necessary logistics and instruments to improve the enforcement of road safety standards on major motorways and other connecting roads, this has not been the case, giving motorists a field day on the road.
