Importers and exporters blame GUTA leadership for the current economic downturn
The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has blamed the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) leadership for the current hardship and high cost of doing business in Ghana.
In a statement signed by Mr. Samson Awingobit Asaki, Executive Secretary, and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Tema, IEAG stated that "all these hardships and challenges are largely due to GUTA's endorsement of government's unwarranted and insensitive trading policies."
According to the Importers and Exporters Association, "the current GUTA leadership is in bed with the government, endorsing all of its policies even when they are not in the best interests of traders."
“"It is concerning that whenever trades organizations protested against some government's unfavorable policies, the government would turn to GUTA for support, or GUTA leaders would go to the government on their own volition to support them at the expense of defending their members' interests."
"Almost all of the policies introduced and implemented by the government have received the blessings of GUTA, yet they will leave the meeting grounds, go into the market, and behave like saints and innocent or ignorant of what is happening to the business community," the statement said.
"The current GUTA executives' treatment of the government and some of its unfriendly trade policies make one wonder if the current GUTA executives are not directly and personally benefiting from the government." the government at the expense of their members and the valued trading public," the statement went on to say.
The IEAG warned that the business community's difficulties would worsen unless the current GUTA leadership recognized that they were leaders because of their members and stood firm to oppose policies that are detrimental to the business community, just as their sister associations do.
"We will continue to have these problems in the Ghanaian trading environment until the current GUTA leadership realizes that they are not leaders on their own and thus cannot take decisions all the time on their own, but rather need to consult with their membership, including sister associations."
It emphasized that "it must therefore be stated that GUTA" Accepting and allowing the implementation of some government's insensitive policies was to blame for the difficulties that all Ghanaian businesses faced."
As a result, the association has called on all importers and traders in Ghana to put pressure on the current GUTA leadership to stand up and think about the plight of traders rather than constantly bowing to the whims and caprices of the current government.
The importers and exporters association explained that interactions with some operators in the country revealed that they were losing a lot of money.
The traders admitted to losing at least 40% of their monthly revenues due to the government's unfavorable policies, according to the association.
It went on to say that the cost of goods has risen by 30% across the board, causing consumers' purchasing power to plummet dramatically.
