While the FA Cup final isn't directly relevant to the Player of the Season award, it did serve as further confirmation that Liverpool is missing a contender.
The Player of the Season award is only given out in the Premier League. However, if those in charge of compiling the shortlist happened to watch the FA Cup final — as one would hope they did — they would have noticed an obvious exclusion from their list. Liverpool will be unconcerned, especially if they add to their trophy tally before the conclusion of the season, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to deny that they were cheated. The method for compiling the shortlists is a well guarded secret. There is a Premier League panel, which includes former players like as Sir Kenny Dalglish, Jamie Carragher, Rio Ferdinand, and Gary Neville, but it appears that their opinions are sought only after the list of applicants has been narrowed down. Their views are then coupled with a public vote that accounts for 10% of the final decision.
In any event, Liverpool has the most representatives on the eight-man shortlist, with two players nominated for the Player of the Season award, alongside Manchester City. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are both in contention. With his FA Cup win, the right-back demonstrated he belongs in such great company.Chelsea has no nominees in the running, although Mason Mount has made the shortlist for the Young Player award. At Wembley, he was thwarted by an outstanding penalty save from Alisson — and it wasn't the Liverpool goalkeeper's first major contribution.
Marcos Alonso appeared ready to ripple the back of the goal when the Brazilian made a fantastic save in regulation time to send the game to penalties. Alisson was out to smother the full-back, making himself huge and keeping the ball out after a slightly sloppy touch from him.Over the span of 120 minutes, there were only two saves. He was a spectator for the bulk of the game, like he is in most Liverpool games. When he was called into action, though, he made a significant difference.
This has been the season's narrative. Liverpool's style of play is high-risk, high-reward: the high line has much more advantages than disadvantages, but it will undoubtedly concede some high-quality opportunities. All of this is made possible by Alisson. His flawless one-on-one record puts all other goalkeepers in the world to shame.Caoimhin Kelleher has enough of the same characteristics as Chelsea's Caoimhin Kelleher to deputize effectively. However, due of Alisson, Liverpool can only compete at the top of the Premier League over the course of a 38-game season. He has been at the core of the current campaign's successes perhaps even more than Salah and Alexander-Arnold.
His prowess was rewarded with a penalty save in the FA Cup final. But there is no doubt that Alisson deserves even more praise: there is no doubt that a robbery has occurred when it comes to the Player of the Season title.
