Yoane Wissa's wizardry hands Brentford triumph at Everton
Yoane Wissa made one goal and scored one more as Brentford intensified Everton's Premier League assignment woes with an exhilarating 3-2 triumph at Goodison Park on Sunday that leaves the Merseyside club, who finished with nine men, still in danger.
Everton's splendid start was compensated with a first goal since August for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, however their day went bad when young focus back Jarrad Branthwaite was deservedly sent-off for a professional foul following 18 minutes.
Brentford accepted control after that as Wissa constrained Everton chief Seamus Coleman to place the ball into his own net, however Richarlison restored the house side's benefit from the penalty spot to give his group a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Yet, two headed goals in 121 seconds just past the hour-mark from Wissa and Rico Henry, and a late red card for Salomon Rondon, gave Brentford a success that leaves Everton two points in front of Burnley in the third assignment position with the two sides having two games remaining.
Everton will get one more opportunity to keep their first class status when they host Crystal Palace on Thursday, and afterward travel to Arsenal on the last day of the mission.
Brentford host Leeds United next Sunday in the last round of the season for the two teams, with the Elland Road side also confronting the danger of assignment.
"It was a fight. The chief said we needed to match the intensity and that is the very thing that we did," Henry told Sky Sports.
"We realized we needed to dive in there and stick together. We need to finish in the main 10. We'll carry it to Leeds."
After Calvert-Lewin had edged Everton in front, the game turned when Branthwaite cut the heels of Ivan Toney as the last defender.
Coleman headed Wissa's cross into his own net, before Richarlison won and changed over a penalty, yet Brentford used their mathematical benefit to incredible impact and turned the screw in the second half.
They were back level after Christian Eriksen's corner was superbly met at the close to post by Wissa, whose circling header floated in at the furthest side of the goal.
Worse was to follow for the hosts moments some other time when Henry headed Christian Norgaard's cross into the net, with Everton's absence of level at the back following Branthwaite's red card remorselessly exposed.
"Extremely frustrating," Calvert-Lewin said. "We started so well. A major decision has conflicted with us and it was troublesome from that point. We got the lead and were shielding, guarding yet sadly it conflicted with us.
"It's still in our hands. The talk after the game was positive. We need to rest and recuperate and function as hard as we possibly can on Thursday."
