Pep Guardiola has told Southampton to beat Liverpool 4-0 after Manchester City's draw with West Ham kept the title chase haunt
When asked if he had a message for Southampton after Manchester City's 2-2 draw with West Ham on Tuesday, Pep Guardiola joked, "beat Liverpool 4-0."
Guardiola's team came back from two goals down to earn a point at the London Stadium, but Riyad Mahrez's late penalty was saved by Lukasz Fabianski.
The draw keeps their title in their hands, but a Liverpool victory over Southampton in their game in hand, live on Sky Sports on Tuesday, will keep the gap at a solitary point on the final day, when City host Aston Villa and Liverpool host Southampton. Liverpool are at home to Wolves as their final fixture.
City, on the other hand, could be crowned champions before Liverpool if they lose at St Mary's Stadium.
In his post-match press conference, Guardiola was asked if he had a message for Southampton, and he replied, "I would say, beat Liverpool four-zero!"
He continued: "The great privilege we have is that it is in our hands at home. We are not required to look at anything other than ourselves. We simply must give our all." 'Don't be sad today because we gave a really good performance,' I told the players. Because both teams are so good, it's only fair to leave it until the last day to decide who wins the championship.'"
Guardiola told Sky Sports about his team's performance in east London: "Excellent comeback.
And a comeback against this team in this stadium, given how well they defend and how strong they are, was a tremendous credit to the team.
"We played a fantastic game." At halftime, we talked about how if we score one goal, we'll be in the game; don't give up. "We were fortunate to score early in the second half." Another week, another game with our fans at home. "I can assure you that the Etihad Stadium will be sold out, and we will put on the best performance possible to win the game and the title." It would have been ideal to win today, but West Ham is in the fight for the Europa League and has had an incredible season. That's good; it's now in our hands.
"It will not be easy, and there will be many emotions. We must train calmly and arrive in good spirits. We only have one week. Some time to rest. And we will do everything possible in that game to win the championship."
Guardiola also defended Mahrez's missed penalty and stated that the Algerian will continue to take penalty kicks in the future.
"Riyad was extraordinary this season," he said. "We scored numerous penalties. This season, we were very good at taking penalties. He accepted responsibility, but he failed to recognize it. He's going to score in the next game."
Guardiola bowed down to West Ham captain Mark Noble after the game and then gave the 35-year-old a warm embrace.
On a day when the home team paid tribute to their long-serving midfielder, who will retire at the end of the season
When asked about what he said to Noble, Guardiola said, "I admire the trajectory of these type of football players." "He spent his entire career in his hometown of West Ham." "Hopefully he can stay in football because the knowledge he's got will be incredible for English football, the Premier League, West Ham... on behalf of Man City, congratulations on his incredible, long career."
