Ghana's economy has never been strong under Akufo-administration Addo's – Sosu.
• Xavier Sosu, a Madina MP, accused the government of being dishonest in its economic management.
• According to an opinion piece written by the Madina MP, poor economic management has resulted in a fiscal deficit of 16.0 percent.
Francis-Xavier Sosu, Member of Parliament for Madina, has responded to the International Monetary Fund's latest assessment of Ghana's debt-to-GDP ratio (IMF).
Following a visit to Ghana by a team of experts from April 28 to May 12, 2021, the Fund revealed in its May 2021 Article IV Consultation paper that Ghana's public debt as a percentage of GDP for 2020 was 78 percent, rather than 76.1 percent as quoted by the government in its 2021 budget statement.
As a result, Francis Sosu, in a blog post, stated that the disparity in figures "reaffirms that Ghana's economy has never been in good shape under the [Akufo-Addo led] Government."
He also stated that poor economic management has resulted in a fiscal deficit management deficit of 16.0 percent.
"It should be noted that the Ghanaian economy has never been in good shape under this administration." According to an analysis of Ghana's economy based on official data from the Finance Ministry, the economy was on the mend when the Administration took office in 2017, with a growth rate of 3.4 percent in 2016 compared to 2.2 percent the previous year."
"As a result, the overall growth rate of 8.1 percent in 2017 indicated stellar economic management under this Administration." However, this was based on an abnormally high growth of 80.3 percent in the petroleum sector in 2017 following a 15.6 percent decline in 2016. "The 3.6 percent growth in the petroleum sector in 2018 provided the government with a reality check, removing completely any hallucinations of sustained economic growth," he wrote.
