Liverpool beat Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday to boost their quadruple this season

Liverpool ensured the Premier League title race will go to the last day of the season as the under-strength quadruple chasers survived a scare to beat Southampton 2-1 on Tuesday.

After Liverpool crushed Chelsea on penalties in a difficult FA Cup last just three days sooner, Jurgen Klopp faced a challenge with nine changes at St Mary's.

Despite successfully handling a reserve group and following to Nathan Redmond's initial strike, Liverpool hit back through goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip.

The Reds are just one point behind leaders Manchester City, with the two teams having one game left.

A title race for the ages will turn out well for City assuming they win against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Klopp insisted at the end of the week that he does not anticipate that City should drop points against Villa.

Yet, Liverpool would be delegated champions for the second time in three seasons in the event that they beat Wolves at Anfield and City neglect to win.

Klopp's side will be supposed to do their piece of the situation against Wolves, especially now their refreshed vital participants can get back to the group.

Sadio Mane, Luis Diaz, Andrew Robertson, Thiago Alcantara and Trent Alexander-Arnold were among those forgotten about against Southampton, while Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were sidelined with injuries suffered at Wembley.

City boss Pep Guardiola said he wanted to watch the game on television and assuming he tuned in, it would have made for frustrating survey as Southampton squandered the lead.

Yet, it was Riyad Mahrez's missed penalty in the last minutes of City's 2-2 draw at West Ham on Sunday which had given Liverpool recharged any desire for getting the leaders.

Furthermore, the Reds, expecting to turn into the first English club to win every one of the four significant trophies in a single season, will settle their history bid in the last two games of their fantastic, long distance race crusade.

First, Liverpool will attempt to keep away from a rehash of 2019, when they beat Wolves on the last day yet were still pipped to the title by City.

Then they head to Paris to confront Real Madrid in the Champions League last on May 28.

RELENTLESS PRESSURE

Southampton had lost seven of their previous 10 association matches, giving Klopp conviction that his strong selection could pay off.

He could have reconsidered when Armando Broja meshed unrestrained into the area, compelling Alisson Becker to save with his out-stretched leg.

It was an admonition Liverpool neglected to notice and Ralph Hasenhuttl's side started to lead the pack following 13 minutes.

Redmond sprinted away down the left flank, slicing inside to the edge of the area and unleashed a furious strike that took an avoidance off James Milner as it flashed into the furthest corner.

Klopp griped furiously that Diogo Jota was fouled by Lyanco in the development at the same time, in spite of the fact that it showed up there was an excursion, the German's protests failed to receive any notice.

With their title hopes in danger, Liverpool showed the desire and character that inspired Klopp to mark them "attitude monsters".

Minamino has struggled to break into the Liverpool group consistently and was sent borrowed to Southampton last season.

The Japan forward took full advantage of an intriguing Premier League start with a splendid balancer in the 27th moment.

Joe Gomez effervesced a pass into Jota and his impeccably weighted lay-off arrived at Minamino, who beat Alex McCarthy at the close to post with a ferocious rising drive.

Liverpool turned the screw and Milner's long-range exertion was pushed away by McCarthy before Roberto Firmino terminated over.

Klopp's men consumed north of 70% of the possession in the first half and it was the same story after the break.

Jota shot just wide from Kostas Tsimikas' cross, while Harvey Elliott smashed into the side-netting from an intense point.

Liverpool's relentless pressure was compensated in the 67th moment.

Matip and Kyle Walker-Peters tested for Tsimikas' corner and the ball circled in over McCarthy, constraining City to save the champagne on ice for the present.
