What Liverpool must do to win the Premier League after Southampton's victory

Liverpool defeated Southampton 2-1 to extend the Premier League title race with Manchester City to the final day of the season.

Liverpool now knows what they must do to win the Premier League title.

The Reds have one more league game left this season, when they host Wolves at Anfield on Sunday. It will be the 62nd game of Jurgen Klopp's 63-game season across all competitions.

Liverpool is now one point behind leaders Manchester City following their 2-1 victory over Southampton. After falling behind to an early Nathan Redmond strike on Tuesday night, the Reds came back to win the game thanks to goals from Takumi Minamino and Joel Matip.

As a result, Liverpool will go into the final day of the season still in contention for the league title. While Liverpool host Wolves, Manchester City host Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium.

After defeating Southampton, Liverpool must defeat Wolves and hope that City fails to defeat Villa at home. If that happens, the championship will be headed to Anfield.

But what if City loses to Villa and Liverpool only draws with Wolves, leaving them both on 90 points?

First and foremost, goal differential would determine the title. And that is very much in City's favor right now. They have a +72 goal differential. The Reds have a plus-66.

If goal difference cannot be used to determine a winner, goals scored will be used. If a winner cannot be declared at that point, it will be determined by total points in Premier League head-to-head matches - and then away goals scored in Premier League head-to-head matches.

However, both matches between Liverpool and City this season, at Anfield and the Etihad, ended 2-2.

A one-off play-off game will be required only if the clubs remain level after that.

If that happens, it will be the first time in top-flight English football history that the title has been decided in this manner. That appears to be highly unlikely.
