Manchester City's star is expected to exit this summer, and Real Madrid could be a potential target
After six years in the Premier League, Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan is set to leave the club this summer.
According to the Daily Mail, Pep Guardiola's first City signing has been told he is free to join another club after one year on his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
According to the Daily Mail, this will be the end of the pair's six-year relationship, which began when City signed the German from Borussia Dortmund for £21 million in 2016.
Gundogan has appeared in 156 Premier League games for Man City, scoring 34 goals and assisting on another 12. Last season was the midfielder's best under Guardiola, as he scored 17 goals and assisted five in all competitions for the Manchester club, but he isn't part of the team's best midfield three this season.
Gundogan has had no concrete links with any club in particular, but when asked about his future, the German told Sport1 last month: "Because of my roots, Turkey is naturally interesting." I also enjoy visiting the United States; I've been there on vacation several times."
This could be an indication of where the 31-year-old wants to play next season, and the Dail Mail has also made a suggestion.
Gundogan was spotted boarding a private jet from Manchester Airport to Madrid on Monday morning, according to the news outlet, and, given that Real Madrid attempted to sign the 31-year-old when he was previously with Borussia Dortmund, they suggest there may be something in it, but the purpose of his trip remains unknown.
Gundogan has been an excellent servant for City over the last six years, and many fans will be disappointed to see him depart this summer.
