Barcelona appears to be closing in on a deal for Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski, with the Pole apparently agreeing to take a significant wage reduction. Since the summer transfer window last year, when they were unable to renew the contract of 7-time Ballon d'Or winner Lionel Messi, the Catalan giants have been in serious financial trouble.
Barcelona are considering making an official bid for Robert Lewandowski, according to Mundo Deportivo, after the Pole stated his decision to leave the Allianz Arena for a new challenge elsewhere. Despite their financial restraints, the 33-year-old considers Barcelona to be the only viable option.
According to the source, the Pole recognises the Catalan giants' predicament and has agreed to a hefty wage cut in order to complete the transfer. Bayern Munich's Lewandowski is said to earn a staggering €22 million per season.
However, because Barcelona is unable to pay the Pole such a big salary, it is thought that the 33-year-old has agreed to cut his demands by up to six million euros. As a result, Xavi's team will only need to pay Lewandowski a gross salary of €16 million every season to secure his services.
Despite the fact that Lewandowski has apparently agreed to drop his wage expectations, securing the deal will be difficult for Barcelona, since they will have to pay Bayern Munich around €40 million in transfer fees, with the Pole still having a year left on his current contract.
As a result, the Catalans may be forced to sell a few players in order to free up some cash. Philippe Coutinho is one such player who the club is eager to trade to Aston Villa for around €20 million. Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti, and Miralem Pjanic are expected to be added to the list. Meanwhile, the team might increase its revenue by negotiating new sponsorship agreements.
