Overspeeding vehicles are killing us, say Abura Tetsi students.
Within a month, at least five students were killed by speeding vehicles in Abura Tetsi, Abura Asebu Kwamankese District, Central Region.
According to the residents, the accidents usually occur on the Assin Fosu-Cape Coast Highway when the children are on their way to and from school.
According to the children, they must walk a long distance to school from Abura Tetsi to Abura Dunkwa and Assin Nyankomase because there is none nearby.
A visit by GHONE TV news reveals, however, that a community of over 2,000 residents could not boast a single school building for the residents.
Pupils aged two to fifteen years always walk along the highway's edges to school, which has resulted in five students being killed by speeding vehicles.
Speaking to a group of students, they pleaded with the government to help them by constructing a school building to prevent the continued death of their classmates.
They also reported being attacked by unscrupulous individuals on their way home from school.
"Recently, one of our colleague females was raped and killed on the Abua Tetsi to Fanti Nyankomases stretch early in the morning on her way to school," a student revealed.
Residents of Abura Tetsi say they are afraid for their children who walk to and from school.
According to them, due to the high number of deaths, they have prohibited the majority of their wards from attending school.
They claimed that such a large community should be served by an educational facility.
They have, however, urged the Member of Parliament for the Abura Asebu Kwamankese Constituency, Elvis Morris Donkor, the District Chief Executive, and the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwun, to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Mr. Kobina Essel, the Area Unit Committee Chairman, stated that they have written several letters to the Abura Asebu Kwamankese District Assembly, the Member of Parliament, and other authorities requesting assistance in building a school in the community but have received no response.
The Chief of Abura Tetsi, Nana Okogyeaman Peprah V, for his part, is appealing to Abura Tetsi residents to help build a community school for the area.
The Chief bemoaned the alarming rate at which children are killed on that stretch of road by vehicles.
