Manchester City are thought to be looking for a dynamic, box-to-box midfielder to improve their midfield options at the conclusion of the season.
After nine years at the Etihad Stadium, Fernandinho is set to leave the Premier League winners, leaving a big void in a squad that has already lost Vincent Kompany, David Silva, and Sergio Aguero in the last three years.
Frenkie de Jong, Declan Rice, and Paul Pogba are among the names associated with a summer move to Manchester City, with the club set to focus on adding a midfielder and ultimately announcing the signing of Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.
According to ESPN's Rob Dawson, City have maintained their hope that Gundogan will remain at the Etihad Stadium at least until the conclusion of his current contract in 2023.
Furthermore, contrary to certain rumours, Gundogan has not voiced a desire to quit the club after it was reported that the three-time Premier League winner was interested in a few ventures overseas.
Sara Arfaoui Gundogan, Ilkay's wife, recently dismissed rumours of a summer exit for the Manchester City player, who was rumoured to be flying to Madrid on a private aircraft on Monday after a report claimed he was on his way out at the conclusion of the season.
Gundogan's current deal at Manchester City expires in just over a year, and while there has been little talk of a possible extension, a move would mean Pep Guardiola losing his first signing since arriving in east Manchester in 2016.
With three points against Aston Villa on Sunday, City can clinch their fourth Premier League title in five seasons, with Gundogan poised to return after starting his side's most recent match at the London Stadium on the bench.
As to whether Gundogan will stay at city or move to a different club it's not yet known until next season starts.
