Former Liverpool player, Steve McManaman has cautioned his former club not to sign Arsenal striker, Eddie Nketiah.

McManaman believes Nketiah is not good enough to play for Liverpool and won’t challenge the current front five of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Nketiah is coming to the end of his contract at the Emirates Stadium and could play his last game for the club on Sunday against Everton.

The 22-year-old looks resigned to leaving the Gunners this summer, having rejected several contract offers.

“I don’t think he’s good enough for Liverpool, to be honest. I like Eddie Nketiah, but he’s not going to dismantle any of that Liverpool front five and the club has an academy full of centre forwards, so I can’t see this move happening,” McManaman told Horseracing.

“Mikel Arteta has selected him a lot recently, but it wasn’t too long ago that he didn’t seem interested in him. He just has to work hard and keep improving.”

He added, “[Alexandre] Lacazette may leave on a free transfer this summer, so there could be space for him to continue with Arsenal. But he needs to see whether his manager is planning on bringing in two or three forwards.”

“If he’s happy there, though and he’s playing there, then he should stay at Arsenal.”

Style of play

Nketiah is known for his pace and movement, his style has been compared to former Arsenal striker Ian Wright. In August 2019 he described Wright as his “mentor”.

His playing style was also compared to Jermain Defoe, due to his movement to play off the last defender’s shoulder and his sharp shooting ability from all angles.

Nketiah can play as a striker or as a wide forward, with Nketiah describing his own playing style as ‘I’m a striker, I’m brave, I like to put myself in the places where the chances are going to fall’.
