According to transfer analyst Dean Jones, Manchester United target Kalidou Koulibaly is better than Harry Maguire, but the Red Devils may face heavy competition for his signing this summer.
After their worst defensive season in 43 years, United are looking to sign the £40.5 million-rated Napoli centre-back when the transfer window opens.
Ahead of January transfer, Newcastle were linked with his services, while Chelsea are also said to be interested in the star defender following uncertainties over the future of both Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen.
But the report states that United are hoping to bring Koulibaly to Old Trafford to replace Maguire, who’s position in the side has come under serious threat in recent times.
However, according to the trusted sources, United are hoping to sign Koulibaly to replace Maguire, whose place in the team has been jeopardized in recent months.
Maguire is still the club captain, although Ralf Rangnick has benched him on several occasions since the turn of the year.
While Jones believes Koulibaly would be an improvement over England's defence, he also believes he is far from flawless.
Jones had something to say about Koulibaly.
"Koulibaly is certainly a better defender than Maguire, but it's not like he's without flaws; he makes mistakes, too," he told GIVEMESPORT.
"He is currently performing at a higher level, but the difficulty will be if they do go for him; after a period of no interest, he now has four or five major European clubs interested in him."
This season, how many goals has Manchester United conceded?
The Red Devils were anticipated to fight for the title after the summer signings of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, as the season went, their chances of even challenging for a top four spot began to fade, and they now find themselves on the verge of missing out on Europa League qualification.
United hasn't been clinical enough on either end of the field, but their defensive record has been one of their biggest issues.
Following the 4-0 defeat at Brighton earlier this month, they've now conceded 56 goals in 37 top-flight games, the most in a league season since 1978-1979, when they allowed 63 goals, highlighting Erik ten Hag's task.
