In separate operations in Accra and Woe in the Volta Region, officers of the Drugs Control Commission (NACOC) confiscated goods suspected to be narcotics.

The first interception occurred at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), where a 46-year-old lady was apprehended while traveling with a white material thought to be cocaine.

The other incident was the recovery of 162 bags of dried leaves presumed to be cannabis after NACOC officials searched a stash house in Woe, a town near Keta in the Volta Region's Anlo District.

KIA has cocaine.

Margret Wolo Maikplay, a Liberian, was arrested at the KIA on Saturday. She was transiting via Ghana on an Asky Airline and was scheduled to fly to Doha-Bangkok on Qatar Airline.

After it was discovered that she had 30 thumb-size pellets of a yellowish material secreted beneath her breasts and in her private regions, the suspect was apprehended as she passed through pre-transit formalities.

The drug collected, weighing 0.36kg, tested positive for cocaine during an initial field test on the day of the arrest, according to NACOC authorities.

Ms Maikplay confessed to inserting some material in her genitals during an initial questioning, according to Francis Opoku Amoah, Manager of NACOC's Public Affairs and International Relations Department, who briefed the Daily Graphic on the arrests.

Mr Amoah continued, "She stated she was approached by one Oratha, a Liberian citizen in Monrovia, who paid her travel expenses to Thailand to deliver the medication to an unknown individual there."

He further stated that the exhibit will be sent to the Ghana Standards Authority for additional analysis as part of the ongoing investigation, and that the suspect would be arraigned.

Illegal

Mr Amoah emphasized that drug trafficking remained illegal in Ghana, and that NACOC remained steadfast in its mission, working with other appropriate state authorities to make drug dealing unprofitable.

He further stated that anyone apprehended for breaking the law will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Arrest warrant, woe raid

He said the raid at Woe was the outcome of the commission's intelligence and surveillance operations.

While the sacks of dried leaves, weighing a total of 7153.51kg, were successfully confiscated, he said that NACOC officers were still looking for one Gideon Yao Kudzinawo, who was thought to be the consignment's owner, and that a warrant had been issued to that effect.

He urged the authorities to capture the culprit and bring him before the Accra High Court.

"NACOC has been chasing Kudzinawo since March 15, but has been unsuccessful.

"A warrant for his arrest has been issued for the possession and exporting of a narcotic drug, contrary to sections 36 and 37 of the Narcotics Control Commission Act 2020, Act 1019," Mr Amoah said.
