3 STORM DRAINS IN ACCRA, WEIJA TO BE COMPLETED SOON

The construction of three storm drains in Accra and Weija is on schedule, with officials estimating that the projects would be completed within a year.

 

The Obetsebi-Lamptey Roundabout, Kaneshie First Light, and Weija Old Barrier storm drains are the three projects.

 

 

 

This was discovered when Abdulai Abanga, the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, reviewed the measures aimed at reducing flooding in Accra.

 

 

 

He was accompanied by engineers from the Ministry of Works and Housing's Hydrological Service Department.

 

 

 

During the inspection, it was discovered that the Weija GICEL drain had been finished. The inspection came after a two-hour storm on Saturday caused flooding near Kaneshie First Light.

 

Some roads in the region, as well as in other sections of the Greater Accra Region, were flooded.

 

 

 

Flood-Prevention Program

 

 

 

Mr Abanga promised that the Kaneshie First Light project, as well as other drainage projects in the vicinity, will be finished by next year to aid with flooding.

 

 

 

He said the government has made available GH50 million to construct 21 drainage projects throughout the nation as part of the Flood Control Program, which is being implemented to strengthen settlement resilience across the country.

 

 

 

He stated that some of the projects had already begun, while others were yet to be granted contracts. Mr Abanga expressed the expectation that all 21 projects will be finished within a year, helping to alleviate the country's flooding problem.

 

He also urged Ghanaians to follow correct solid waste disposal techniques to ease the country's recurring floods.

 

 

 

At Weija Old Barrier, the status of a drainage facility

 

 

 

He pointed out that throwing solid garbage into drains without regard contributed greatly to urban floods by clogging drains, causing storm water to overflow into houses and businesses.

 

 

 

"We must practice discipline and properly dispose of solid trash since sewers are designed to convey water, not solid garbage." Drain building is a costly job, so if they are installed and individuals opt to throw solid trash into them, we would not get the desired outcomes," Mr Abanga stated.

 

Storm drain Kaneshie First Light

 

 

 

The Kaneshie First Light storm drain project, according to Richard Amekor, Head of Drainage at the Hydrological Service Department, would assist relieve the area's chronic floods.

 

 

 

To remedy the leakage, he claimed the project will connect the roadside drain to the subterranean sewers.

 

 

 

He claimed many additional drainages were being built as part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project (GARID), and that several will be finished within three months.
