Three men accused of attacking Benya FM have been granted bail
Three men accused of attacking Elmina-based radio station, Benya FM, have been granted bail by the Cape Town Regional Court amounting to GHC30,000 and two guarantees each, one of which will be pardoned.
Isaac Opare Aikins, 25, and guard; Michelle Asabre, 25, premix fuel minister; and Anthony Eshun, 32, a businessman, have been charged with assault, trespassing, conspiracy to commit robbery, theft, and causing grievous bodily harm.
However, they denied all charges when they appeared in court led by Dorinda Smith-Arthur on Friday.
They will reappear on June 28, 2022.
Prosecutor Chief Inspector Theresa Agbavor said the plaintiffs were Eric Blessing Eshun, a presenter, and Anthony Agyirfar, a specialist for Benya Radio.
He said on Monday, May 16, 2022, for about 2000 hours, the complainants were on duty as a presenter and co-ordinator with their standard program called “Afarikua”, a fishermen and farmers program.
He said the presenter of the program, during the program, talked about issues affecting premix fuel given to non-fishers and boat owners.
He said the presenter also commended the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo municipal chief executive officer for involving the police in distributing petrol to determine whether the violence was serious.
Chief Inspector Agbavor said Aikins, Asabre, and Eshun stormed the station, dispersed, and damaged several pieces of equipment including the GHC2,500 studio mixer, two GHC500 headphones, five GHC20 value monitors, 000, and six system units. is estimated at GHC6,000 and three keyboards with a value of GHC180.
He said they also demolished three office tables for GHC4,500, two rolling chairs costing GHC 1,728, and a GHC 40 Video Graphic Adapter cable.
The prosecutor said the suspects also broke into the program manager's office and confiscated an HP laptop with a value of GHC3,500.
He said they continued to confront the presenter of the program by saying their names and beating him to death.
He added that a co-ordinator who tried to rescue his colleague was also beaten.
He said the complainants reported the case to Elmina police and were given medical treatment forms to go to
at the hospital while a monitoring team was dispatched to the press to ensure order.
He told the court that Aikins was arrested on his way to Cape Coast and that his investigation led to the arrest of Asabre and Eshun.
