Jack Grealish has provided yet another reason for Aston Villa to cause the upset that Liverpool desires
Jack Grealish may have spoken too soon before the final day. He may have given Aston Villa another reason to help Liverpool win the Premier League.
"Stevie Will Be Professional," says Jurgen Klopp of Gerrard's title impact.
Jurgen Klopp: "Stevie Will Be Professional" Impact of Gerrard's Title
Not only will Liverpool be hoping for an old friend to assist them in their quest for the Premier League title. Jack Grealish left Aston Villa last summer, and he'll be hoping for a fairytale reunion when his old team visits the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Grealish's £100 million move sparked outrage among Villa fans when he left the club. As Villa's captain and a club legend, many expected him to stay and help Villa achieve their European football ambitions.
However, Man City's offer was too good to pass up in the end, and Grealish etched his name in infamy among some supporters of his boyhood club with the haste with which he decided to leave for greener pastures.
In retrospect, given that he hasn't yet played a game in a City shirt, the £100m may have been an excessive figure, and one that Aston Villa should have been pleased to receive.
If there is still a desire for vengeance among the Aston Villa fans, then Sunday afternoon at the Etihad Stadium is the ideal venue for Villa to strike back at Grealish and avenge the heartbreak he caused the club's fans last summer, especially with Grealish appearing to regard the game as a foregone conclusion
"I can't wait; it's going to be a fantastic day." Didn't it have to be against Aston Villa? "It couldn't have been any other game," Grealish told Sky Sports after Manchester City's 1-1 draw with West Ham United.
He then went on to emphasize the significance of the game, but he ended with even more glee about lifting the trophy:
"But that's irrelevant. It's not about me, and it's not about the opponent. It's all about the team and the club. We'll go out there and try to win,and get all three points.
"I'm really looking forward to [the potential trophy lift]. It's something I've never done before, winning a trophy on the last day of the season, so I can't wait; I'm already buzzing."
Grealish's words are tinged with contempt. His assumption that it will be a "great day" should irritate both Aston Villa and Liverpool fans, as should the fact that he is talking about the game with an arrogance that could irritate people.
