Sunderland elevated to Championship after playoff final triumph

Sunderland secured advancement to the Championship with a 2-0 win against Wycombe in the League One play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.

Alex Neil's side finished their club's bleak record of seven bombed play-off crusades thanks to goals from Elliot Embleton and Ross Stewart.

The Black Cats' advancement legitimized the choice to sack Lee Johnson in January and supplant him with previous Preston manager Neil.

Following four years in the third level wild, Sunderland are at long last on the up as the dormant beasts alert from their sleep.

While a re-visitation of the Premier League won't be simple for Neil's group next term, that will be the goal for a club with tremendous potential who last played in the first class in 2017.

More than 45 000 Sunderland fans transformed Wembley into a cauldron of clamor after the red and white-clad crowds had assumed control over London milestone Trafalgar Square just before the match.

Wycombe's mission for a moment return to the Championship fell at the last obstacle, meaning 40-year-old Adebayo Akinfenwa's 755th and last appearance of his profession finished in frustration.

"I'll be straightforward with you, the greatest tension really was from myself. Individuals that own the club, that wasn't what was talked about, it was exactly 'How might you fix it?'," Neil said.

"I fixed the pieces we expected to fix. I would have rather not overseen in League One, so I needed to get the club out of League One to turn into a Championship supervisor again under a great deal of examination.

"Whenever you have a gathering of players like that, it's anything but an issue."

Given their pathetic history in the end of the season games, where they had lost three finals and three elimination rounds, Sunderland showed up at Wembley tormented by the apparitions of past disappointments.

However, they matched Wycombe's actual methodology blow for blow and created the better going after play to run out merited victors.

Sunderland made the forward leap in the twelfth moment when childhood fan Embleton legitimized his review with a fine run and turning shot from 25 yards that escaped a frail endeavored save from David Stockdale.

Advancement was fixed in the 79th moment when the compelling Alex Pritchard chose Stewart and he bored a clinical completion in the base corner from the edge of the area.
