A good signing can mean the difference between success and failure. We enjoy it when a new signing has an immediate impact.

But, let's face it, the signings that we remember the most are the ones that go tragically wrong. There's an Ushau Abu for every Sulley Muntari, a Stephen Amankona for every Franck Etouga Mbella, and a Gladson Awako for every... Gladson Awako.

This is more than a list of dud purchases; it's a collection of people whose arrival sent fans into a tizzy, making their respective and relative failures in their respective clubs' shirts all the more tough to swallow.

Amankona, Stephen (Asante Kotoko)

Given his successes with Berekum Chelsea prior to moving to Kumasi, the recruitment of Amankona appeared to be a stroke of genius.

Before his departure, the crafty forward shredded defenses, scored and assisted, and was the most talked-about player in the league. However, he appeared to be confused in Prosper Narteh Ogum's tactical complexity at Kotoko.

Awako Gladson ( Hearts of Oak)

Hearts supporters awaited the completion of Gladson Awako's transfer for weeks. Supporters, though, never saw the old Awako. He had a bright start in friendlies, but he always seemed out of shape.

The dire predictions concerning his fitness have come to pass. He typically played with other people.

UshauAbu (Hearts of Oak)

The Phobians and Ushau Abu had made such a big deal about his arrival earlier in the season that if he didn't live up to expectations right away, there would be rumblings and unhappiness.

He came from Berekum Chelsea as a substitute for Benjamin Afutu, and while being younger, he was seen as a talent capable of developing and eventually matching Afutu. It just hasn't occurred for him at Hearts, save for a few isolated bursts of brilliance.

Boateng Frimpong ( Great Olympics)

Boateng's inclusion in the Olympics was a declaration of purpose. Boateng's presence sparked a lot of excitement. The Dade Boys were even expected to win the championship right immediately. The midfielder had been outstanding for King Faisal, and there were high hopes that he would repeat his performance. It never happened.

Boateng's debut season in Accra was marred by injuries, but even when healthy, he struggled to make an impression.

Afoakwa Dickson ( Asante Kotoko)

Dickson Afoakwa, another Kotoko player, has flattered to deceive. Afoakwa has struggled to establish himself at Kotoko despite being identified as a direct replacement for Emmanuel Gyamfi, who left after his contract expired.

Akatuk, Frederick (Accra Lions)

Last season, the 19-year-old made a seamless transition from winger to no.9, netting 17 goals for Tudu Mighty Jets.

Akatuk provided so much more than goals, dropping deep to connect up play with midfield and foraging down the channels to create pressure on opposing defenses.

His strongest skills included speed, a never-say-die attitude, and a willingness to give 100 percent every time he went onto the pitch, as well as his sharp finishing ability. Unfortunately, the youth has been unable to recreate the same traits with the Accra Lions, making game time difficult to come by.
