Monaco president Paul Mitchell has spoken about his club's likely decision to sell Aurelien Tchouameni to either Liverpool or Real Madrid ahead of the summer transfer season.
Real Madrid and Liverpool have both been told that they can sign Monaco star Aurelien Tchouameni. The highly-rated defensive midfielder's current club has slapped a £60 million price tag on his head amid links with a move to both Anfield and the Santiago Bernabeu ahead of the summer transfer window, with the 22-year-old being a target for the pair of Champions League finalists. Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell has revealed that the Ligue 1 club is eager to sell Tchouameni, who has also been linked with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, but that all possibilities are being considered.
When asked by RMC Sport whether he would prefer to sell the France international to Liverpool, who have apparently signed terms, or Real Madrid, Mitchell, the former Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig manager, replied: "I don't have a preference to be honest.Everyone could see what a great player Aurelien is, but everyone also understands that we are a forward-thinking club with a forward-thinking owner. So, when it comes to selling him, I have no preference. To lose such a brilliant player, we will have to be quite proactive in terms of the sum we expect."
When asked how tough it will be for Monaco to replace Tchouameni, Mitchell said: "That is why he is in such high demand! Especially in the clubs you described, the market is generally fairly clever. As a result, replacing him will be extremely difficult, but we will make every effort to boost the team's maximum capacity. I believe it is critical to continue strengthening the team rather than focusing solely on the individuals. We have a very competitive style of play, so building the depth of the team and the overall quality of the group would be a mark of success for us, especially because we will be playing matches until mid-September after the pre-season. That is why I believe that replacing Aurelien Tchouameni at that time would be tough, but not impossible.Tchouameni's pedigree was demonstrated throughout a stellar season in the French top flight. While his goal and assist totals in 35 outings aren't very outstanding, Liverpool and Real Madrid are interested in his defensive abilities.
Last season, Monaco's No.8 averaged 2.2 tackles and 2.7 interceptions per game for both club and country, frequently partnering Manchester United's Paul Pogba for France. Tchouameni, who is also capable of clean dribbling and splitting the lines with exquisite passes, is now a fixture for Didier Deschamps' side, having started the UEFA Nations League final last autumn.
