Once upon a time a man wore many colors for years but the color blue left a scar on his skin; a scar he proudly displays. In the depths of creativity lies a desire to shut opponents out and that was the desire, the grits and the vile of the 2004/2005 Chelsea team and at the heart of it all was a man whose story remains untold.
John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho are adored by many Chelsea fans as perhaps the greatest centre back partnership in premier league history. The 2004/2005 season would go down as the best defensive campaign by any premier league team in a 38 match season.
Many are quick to praise the duo of Terry and Carvalho as the marshals of such defensive acumen throughout a campaign season but it will be interesting to know that the centre back combination that should get most of the praise for that season was the Terry/Gallas centre back pairing. When asked who his best centre pairing was in his career Blues legend John Terry named William Gallas.
In the 2004/2005 premier league season Chelsea conceded 15 premier league goals keeping 24 clean sheets in the process.
John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho started 19 premier league matches together at the heart of the Chelsea defense and kept 11 clean sheets conceding in 8 of those matches
John Terry and William Gallas started 16 premier league matches at the heart of the Chelsea defense and kept 13 clean sheets conceding in only 3 matches
It is worth noting it was the Terry/Gallas partnership that ensured we went 83 days (over 1000 minutes of premier league action) without conceding a goal.
Ricardo Carvalho would go on to establish a solid centre back partnership with John Terry in the ensuing years but whenever the 2004/2005 season is mentioned remember there was an untold story and perhaps a forgotten name and his name is WILLIAM GALLAS
