Prof Martey explains why some Christian leaders are silent about widespread corruption.
Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey, a former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, has explained why a segment of Christendom has been deafeningly silent on some of the country's current ills.
Speaking at a public lecture in Koforidua, the clergyman known for his famous 'nyasafuoeii mo wo hen' remark said Christian leaders are hesitant to speak out against widespread corruption in the country because they are afraid of harsh insults from the public.
"Ghanians have the ability to insult... Many pastors are unable to bear such insults and, as a result, remain silent in the face of corruption. But they forget that's how the master went," Prof Martey explained.
Rev. Prof. Martey, who was previously known for his outspoken comments on national issues such as corruption and economic mismanagement during the Mahama administration, observed that some pastors are unable to preach prophetic messages with authority because they have been compromised by bribes.
"Some pastors accept gifts that turn out to be baits and bribes, which then silence church leaders from preaching prophetic messages with power." Rev. Prof. Martey noted that "sometimes such so-called gifts and the accompanying conversations are secretly recorded, which spells doom for the pastor."
Why don't Christians criticize again?
According to Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey, many church leaders are afraid to speak out against corrupt politicians because they share the same ethnic background as some of them.
This is because church leaders "fear being accused of betrayal of ethnic brothers and sisters," he explained.
"They are also concerned that church members from the ethnic group of corrupt people they are speaking out against will leave the church," Rev. Prof. Martey added.
Prof. Martey's novel approach
While explaining why he has not been vocal in recent times, Rev. Prof. Martey stated that he has used text messaging, among other methods, to express his views on national issues.
"The Presbyterian Church of Ghana's revelation, practice, and procedure, the spirit of our constitution is that the Presbyterian Church has only one representative to speak on behalf of the Church, and that person is the serving Moderator," Rev. Prof. Martey stated.
He claims that many things have occurred as a result of his intervention, which is why he keeps speaking.
