Danny Drinkwater, a Chelsea midfielder, has confirmed his departure from the club after nearly five years at Stamford Bridge.
Drinkwater was acquired by Chelsea from Leicester after the latter's sensational season in which they won the Premier League. Drinkwater has struggled at Chelsea since the move, making only 12 league games and being loaned out to four different clubs.
Drinkwater has announced his departure from Chelsea this summer on Instagram, which includes a heartfelt apology to the fans following his unsatisfactory stint.
His £35 million move from Leicester City in 2017 seemed like such a good idea at the time, but many consider him to be one of the club's worst transfers ever.
The three-time England international hasn't looked like a Chelsea player at any point throughout his career and has spent time on four different loan spells, including this season at Reading.
Nobody can take away his Premier League title medal, which he earned with Leicester. In 2018, he also won the FA Cup with Chelsea.
Even on loan, the former Leicester man failed, making only five league outings for Burnley and Aston Villa respectively.
Drinkwater cited injuries, being treated unfairly, and off-the-field concerns as reasons for his failure at the club in his resignation post.
After guiding Leicester City to their first Premier League title, it's difficult to understand why Drinkwater didn't flourish at Chelsea. According to the BBC, the 32-year-old signed for Chelsea for £35 million, but they will not return any of their investment because he will leave on a free transfer.
Drinkwater, to be honest, can still provide a lot to Championship teams.
During his season-long loan at Reading, the central midfielder made 34 appearances in all competitions, so it'll be fascinating to see who tries to sign him now that he's a free agent.
Drinkwater was praised by the Reading media for a performance early in the season, and there were hints of a comeback in his playing over the last nine months.
Unfortunately, he was unable to make that transition when he moved from Leicester to Stamford Bridge in a large deal.
Chelsea's drinking water
With an emotional letter on Instagram, Drinkwater announced his departure from the Blues this summer.
He provides an open and honest view of his Chelsea tenure, which is actually quite refreshing to read.
Mason Mount, as well as a number of other former and current Chelsea players, have reacted to Drinkwater's comments.
Mount wrote, "What a dude."
