According to reports, Liverpool has held speculative transfer talks with Tottenham striker Harry Kane about a possible blockbuster transfer. Should either Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane go, the Reds are preparing for every eventuality, and Kane has reportedly been considered as a substitute.
Salah's and Mane's contracts are set to expire in the summer of 2023. The Egyptian has confirmed that he would stay at Liverpool for the 2022-23 season, but no extension has been reached.
Mane has been more evasive regarding his future, telling journalists earlier this week that he will give a definitive response after Saturday's Champions League final against Real Madrid. Last season, the Liverpool attackers scored 54 goals in all competitions and would need to be replaced by a world-class striker if one of them left Anfield.
Signing England captain Kane, who had another good year in front of goal despite a poor start, would be the ideal way to do so. Liverpool had previously been connected with the Spurs ace, but their interest is now said to be more serious.
According to The Anfield Wrap podcast, the Merseyside club has held intense talks with Kane over a potentially lucrative transfer. The 28-year-old is one of only a few players capable of replacing Salah and Mane's goals.
However, a deal is exceedingly unlikely, and the conversations could simply be Liverpool testing the waters. Spurs refused to trade Kane to Manchester City last summer and will very certainly do so again now that they have qualified for the Champions League next season.
In the weeks following Euro 2020, City are thought to have made a bid of roughly £150 million for the Three Lions star. To entice Kane away from the North Londoners this summer, a similar figure would almost certainly be required.
