The UEFA Champions League is an annual club football competition organized by UEFA and contested by top-tier European teams. The competition winners are determined through a round-robin group stage to qualify for a double-leg knockout format and a single-leg final.
It is the most prestigious club competition in European football, and it is contested by the national league champions (and, in certain cases, one or more runners-up) of their respective national associations.
The European Cup, originally known as the Coupe des Clubs Champions Européens (French for European Champion Clubs' Cup), was first staged in 1955 as a single-elimination tournament open only to the champions of Europe's domestic leagues, with the winner crowned European club champion.
The competition has held its current name since the 1997–1998 season, with a round-robin group stage added in 1991 and multiple entrants from some countries allowed.
It has since been expanded, and while most European national leagues can still only enter their champion, the most powerful leagues can now enter up to four teams.
Teams that finish second to last in their national league after failing to qualify for the Champions League will be eligible for the UEFA Europa League, and teams that do not qualify for the UEFA Europa League will be eligible for the UEFA Europa Conference League, which will begin in 2021.
Spain had the most wins (18), followed by England (14), and Italy (13). (13). (12 victories) England has the most championship-winning clubs in the world, with five clubs. The competition has been won by 22 clubs, 13 of whom have won it many times, and eight of which have successfully defended their title.
Real Madrid is the most successful club in the event, having won it 13 times, including the first five seasons and three consecutive years from 2016 to 2018.
Bayern Munich remains the only team to have won all of its matches in a single tournament en route to winning the tournament for the 2019–2020 season. Chelsea is the current champion, having defeated Manchester City 1–0 in the 2021 final in Porto.
