What is the procedure for qualifying for the Champions League? (UCL Updates)

UEFA's "country coefficients," which are derived based on the relative strength of each nation's league, mostly taking into consideration that league's recent finishes in Champions League activity, decide the amount of Champions League places for each European domestic league.

Given Premier League clubs' recent domination in the Champions League, it's no surprise that England is the top-ranked nation in the UEFA coefficient rankings, followed by Spain, Italy, and Germany. For the top four finishers in their respective domestic leagues, those four nations receive four direct slots in the Champions League group stage.

The next two nations, France and Portugal, have three Champions League slots: two go straight to the group stage, and the third goes to the knockout stage.

In a similar manner, the remaining Champions League group stage and qualification berths are distributed. This year, though, there is a new wrinkle: Russia has been disqualified from all European contests as a result of the aftermath from its invasion of Ukraine.

As a result, the coefficient rankings for all teams below Russia have risen one spot. Scotland will receive an automatic berth in the group stage, which will be awarded to the Scottish champion.
