A win for Liverpool in Paris on Saturday night may not be as devastating as Man United supporters believe.
Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 by defeating Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 by defeating Tottenham Hotspur. Every Manchester United fan will be hoping Real Madrid defeats Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday.
The Old Trafford supporters had had a stomach-churning season, watching their rivals win two trophies and miss out on the league title by a whisker, while United failed to even make the top four. If Jurgen Klopp's side loses this weekend, United fans will be able to look back on a dreadful season with a wry grin on their faces.
However, if the German strategist wins the Champions League, history suggests that the next season will be fruitful for United supporters.
Four of Ralf Rangnick's coaching staff are poised to be offloaded by Erik ten Hag, who has already begun the shake-up behind the scenes at Old Trafford. In his first press conference on Monday, he also made a good first impression.
Ten Hag claimed that United was his favorite English team as a boy, so he will be fully aware of the club's illustrious history and may be inspired by the recent tendency of United winning the Champions League whenever Liverpool does (formerly the European Cup).
The previous four times the trophy has returned to Anfield, Liverpool has finished in the top four the following season. They came in third place in 2020 and second place in 2006.
This tendency appeared to start in the 1980s, when the club finished fourth and third, respectively, in 1985 and 1982. They also won a cup competition on two of those occasions.
In 1985, they won the FA Cup, and again in 2006, they won the League Cup. Even in 2020, United reached the Europa League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup semi-finals.
If Liverpool wins on Saturday, United supporters will be hoping for history to repeat itself. After all, if they win, we have to look for a silver lining someplace.
