Real Madrid became European champions for a record 14th time after beating Liverpool 10 men in a Champions League final that started 37 minutes late due to worrying crowd problems outside the Stade de France near Paris.

Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior hit a shot from close range 59 minutes in from Federico Valverde's strike in front of Liverpool's goal, securing Saturday's win and helping coach Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid won a record fourth Cup title from Europe.

When Madrid completed the Champions League double in La Liga, Liverpool ended a promising season. A week ago, he was fighting for four major titles like never before - with both domestic cups in England.

England couldn't find a way past Madrid's Thibaut Courtois, who hit a half-time finish from Sadio Mane and made a better save to thwart Mohamed Salah's effort in the 81st minute.

"Nobody stood in my way today," Courtois said.

"No matter what, I will win the Champions League."

Vinicius fell to his knees and covered his face. Many of his teammates ran the length of the field to celebrate in front of Madrid fans at one end of the stands.

Madrid's series winner Marcelo, who didn't even play a minute in Saturday's final, had the honor of lifting the trophy between fireworks and duct tape.

 King of European Football

Madrid have cemented their status as the kings of European football, as the Spanish giants hold twice as many European Cups as AC Milan. Liverpool stay above six.

However, crowd problems before the match have affected this final and will certainly be investigated by UEFA and the authorities in the coming days.

With 45 minutes to go, there are still long lines of Liverpool fans waiting to enter the field. There were also sporadic cases of fans breaking into security and rushing into the lobby.

The situation began to spiral out of control as riot police deployed tear gas at Liverpool supporters inside the fence, while some supporters were seen widening the fence.

Staff with batons and riot shields ran from door to door to prevent supporters' bags from being forced into the stadium without showing tickets.

Liverpool couldn’t find way past Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois: ‘Today nobody was going to get in my way,’ he said.
