This season, Darwin Nunez has been an outstanding performer for Benfica. The Uruguayan striker has scored 34 goals for the Portuguese side in all competitions, earning him interest from some of Europe's finest clubs. Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, and Chelsea are three of the best teams in the world. Manchester United and Newcastle are among the clubs interested in signing the 22-year-old, who has seen a significant improvement in form this season.
Many European clubs are seeking for a striker in strong form to lead their line, and his eye for goal has put him on their radar. This season, the brilliant striker scored six goals in ten appearances for Benfica in the Champions League, including a goal and a half in the team's tie against Liverpool. Despite missing some games due to a knee injury this season, he scored more than 30 goals and added four assists in 41 games, totaling 38 goal involvements. Only a few players in Europe have scored more goals than the kid, prompting numerous inquiries from his parent club. Fabrizio Romano, a transfer expert, says Nunez is worth £64 million to £68 million, and the Blues appear to agree.
Nunez, on the other hand, will not be a cheap signing for whichever team is fortunate enough to land him. Even though Transfermarkt currently values him at £40 million, Romano has stated that the Uruguay international will cost between €75 and €80 million (£64 million and £68 million). A number of clubs will be involved in what could be a challenging transfer battle for one of Europe's greatest up-and-coming strikers.
At the end of the day, the most crucial question is whether this price effectively eliminates the Blues from contention. Should Chelsea go all out this summer to sign Nunez? It has made huge investments on forwards over the last few seasons.
After winning the Champions League the previous season, the Blues signed Romelu Lukaku for a club-record £97.5 million from Inter Milan. Timo Werner had joined from RB Leipzig in Germany while Kai Havertz had joined from Bayer Leverkusen just a year previously. In this case, it would be prudent for the board to assess whether signing Nunez is indeed required, given the high price tag placed on him by Benfica.
Callum Hudson-Odoi, Christian Pulisic, and Hakim Ziyech are the players already in the Blues' top ranks, in addition to the aforementioned trio. Since Tuchel's arrival in January 2021, Mason Mount has largely played as a winger. Buying a new striker and keeping all of the forwards would be a good idea.
Tuchel and the club's new board of directors now have complete control. The attackers' futures, notably that of Lukaku, are crucial heading into the summer. Last summer, the Belgian was brought in from Italy to help the Blues' assault, but he did anything but that in his second season. Since returning to England, he has failed to establish himself and impress Tuchel sufficiently to be named in the starting lineup on a regular basis. Nunez is a fantastic striker, and many fans would love to see him back in west London next season, but in the current situation, adding another attacker isn't a good idea if Lukaku intends to stay.
The former Inter Milan player is eager for a second chance.
