Most Rev. Richard Kuuia Baawobr, of the Catholic Diocese of Wa Diocese in the Upper West Region, has been appointed by Pope Francis as the new cardinal of Ghana.
Pope Francis made the announcement on Sunday, May 29 in Rome along with 20 other cardinals of the Church.
The cardinals serve as CEOs of Roman Curia (ecclesiastical office), diocesan administrators, and for the most part church agents.
They wear various red pieces of clothing called "Size," and they are known as chapel sovereigns.
Participation does not give much power, however, the cardinals have their two main characteristics of assisting the pope in the civil authorities of the extraordinary ordinary Church and, most importantly, electing another pope whom they serve. As shown by ancient tradition, they have appointed “nobles” because of their position of ambition and the fact that centuries earlier most people were people from large and highly respected European families. Today many cardinals come from very low beginnings.
In 2016, the Holy Father appointed Pastor Fr. Richard Kuuia Baawobr, M. Afr., Former African Missionary (White Father) as Archbishop of the Diocese of Wa (Ghana).
Fr. Richard Kuuia Baawobr, M. Afr., Born June 21, 1959, in Tom-Zendagangn, Diocese of Wa.
He went to a nearby school and continued his research at St. Francis Xavier Minor Seminary and Nandom Secondary School.
He entered St. Louis. Victor diocesan Major Seminary in Tamale in 1979, after his philosophical examination. In 1981 he went to the African Missionary Society, where he continued his missionary studies. From 1981 to 1982 he was in Friborg, Switzerland, in his Novitiate.
Then, from 1982 to 1987, he completed his religious studies at Missionary Institute London (MIL). On December 5, 1986, he made a solemn promise to St. Petersburg. Edward's College, London and was ordained a pastor on July 18, 1987.
Since his appointment, he has served in related philosophical and academic fields: 1987-1991: Assistant Priest in Livulu, Diocese of Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo; 1991-1996: Student lecturer at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Ignatian Spirituality at Le Chatelard in Lyon, France, where he received a Scholarship in the Holy Scriptures and a Doctor of Biblical Theology; 1996-1999: Founder of African Missionaries in Kahangala, Tanzania; 1999-2004: Director of the Toulouse model house in France; 2004-2010: First African Missionary Assistant.
