Made me suffer': Cristian Romero admits it was very difficult playing against Liverpool's 25-year-old star this season
Cristian Romero has named Liverpool’s Luis Diaz as one of two players he least enjoyed facing in the Premier League last season.
In an interview with ESPN, Romero admitted the Liverpool man was one of his toughest opponents of the year.
Luis Diaz and Sterling are the two players who made me suffer the most,” claimed the 24-year-old.
Romero was one of the stand-out defenders of the season after joining Spurs last summer. However, Liverpool’s Colombian livewire still made sure it wasn’t all smooth sailing for him.
Diaz fails to shine in Paris
Much had been expected of Diaz ahead of Saturday night’s Champions League final. The 25-year-old had been sensational since joining Liverpool after all.
It didn’t all go to plan at the Stade de France, though. Diaz was lively as ever but he struggled to get the better of Dani Carvajal on Real Madrid’s right.
As the game wore on, he became a peripheral figure and was eventually replaced after 65 minutes.
Even in the context of the game, Jurgen Klopp’s decision to replace Diaz was still a surprise.
The Colombian is capable of pulling something out of the hat and could have got at the Madrid defence as they held on at the end.
Instead, the introduction of Diogo Jota didn’t have the intended effect and Liverpool somewhat ran out of steam.
That will have been a frustration for Diaz, who possibly didn’t quite do himself justice on the biggest stage.
All the more motivation to come back and do it all over again next year. With six months and a full pre-season behind him, Diaz is going to be an even bigger nightmare for Premier League defenders next year.
