Ghana needs a leader with late President Mills’ qualities—Archbishop Naameh.
According to Most Reverend Philip Naameh, Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, the current political climate in the country requires a leader with the qualities of former President Atta Mills to rally all citizens for national development.
The judiciary, security services, and the use of state security to crackdown on the media and dissenting views, as well as a lack of inclusivity and excessive partisanship in Parliament, he said, adding that the situation was not conducive to national development.
Most Rev. Naameh was delivering a lecture on "Values of Professor Mills that Our Leaders Should Emulate to Promote Good Governance" at the inaugural John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Lectures for Northern Ghana to commemorate the tenth anniversary of his death.
It was organized by the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage in Tamale for former President Mills, who served as the Fourth Republic's third President (2009 to 2012).
"Professor Mills struck me as a very decent person with a strong sense of God's fear." Prof Mills' personality was defined by his humility, honesty, courage, faith, calmness, peacefulness, and tolerant nature, according to him.
"He was a decent and polite politician, someone who believed in our country's youth."
According to Most Rev. Naameh, Professor Mills had a strong sense of forgiveness because he did not wish to carry out any kind of political vendetta, and he was also very respectful and accommodating of dissenting views.
"This is the spirit we need in our politics today to alleviate the political tension between the NDC and the NPP."
He stated that leadership is an opportunity to help others develop, not just enrich oneself and party members.
"Professor Mills believed that leadership was for service, so as a leader, he was the people's servant." He did not want to lord it over others and instead wanted to use his presidency to serve the 'Better Ghana Agenda' and save citizens' lives rather than lord it over them."
"We need Professor Mills' character of listening to bring all points of view and all people on board." In the current political climate of our country, Ghana requires a leader with these qualities. To promote good governance, our leaders should model his qualities."
Most Rev. Naameh advised the National Democratic Congress to maintain unity among its members "because if you are not united, even if you are able to wrestle power from the current government, disunity alone will work to demolish you."
He urged the party's leadership to uphold Atta Mills' legacy of inclusivity and commitment to youth employment in order to ensure holistic development.
Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the NDC's 2020 Vice Presidential Candidate, stated that Prof Mills' legacy of unity, common purpose, caring, trust, respect for all, and tolerance would remain the Party's cornerstone.
Prof Stephen Kendie of the University of Cape Coast expressed concern about the economy's management, saying, "Prof Atta Mills would never collateralize all state funds as is currently being done."
