Despite Liverpool's heartbreak, Jurgen Klopp was correct about the Champions League final risk.
Liverpool were beaten in the Champions League final by Real Madrid, but manager Jurgen Klopp will have no regrets about his defensive choices.Jurgen Klopp's primary selection dilemma ahead of Saturday night's Champions League final was how Liverpool should line up defensively against Real Madrid.
The attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Luis Diaz, as well as the midfield quartet of Fabinho, Thiago, and Jordan Henderson, appeared to be set in stone, fitness permitting. The battle for Virgil van Dijk's partner was anything but clear-cut at centre-back, with Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate competing for the spot.On paper, Matip, 30, appeared to be the safer option, given he had a strong season in the Premier League and had an assist and a clean sheet against Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League final. Konate, 23, has started the majority of Liverpool's knockout European games this season, but he made a mistake that resulted in a goal in the club's final domestic match, a 3-1 win against Wolves.Despite this, Klopp stayed with the Frenchman against Real Madrid and was rewarded handsomely for it. Throughout the game, Konate was effective in each of his three attempted tackles, as well as carrying and passing the ball out from the back with composure and poise.
Although Vinicius Junior scored the game-winning goal, the Brazilian had a difficult time against the towering Liverpool defense, completing only one of his five attempted dribbles on the night. In a close defeat at the Stade de France, Konate more than justified his position in the lineup and was arguably the best of Klopp's players.Trent Alexander-Arnold lavished praise on him the next day, as Liverpool's players were cheered through the city streets during a celebration parade to celebrate their EFL Cup and FA Cup victories.
Was Real Madrid's 1-0 victory in the final a fair result? Let us know what you think in the comments...
"Wow. Outstanding. I'm speechless after seeing him perform yesterday. Words are inadequate to describe it "Konate, the right-back told LFCTV. "We've formed a bond, and he's a fantastic young man. He has an unbelievable amount of potential. There's no limit to what you can achieve."
Alexander-Arnold clearly enjoys playing alongside Konate, who will be hoping for a bigger role in the Premier League next season after only making 11 appearances in his initial season at Anfield. The Paris native, affectionately known as "Ibu," arrived on Merseyside in a £36 million trade from RB Leipzig last summer and has already formed a strong bond with the supporters.Following the final, he wrote on Twitter: "We fought until the bitter end. I'm confident that this experience will enable us to grow and return more stronger the next year. Paris was packed with red supporters, and I'd like to express my gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering support during the final and the entire year."
