Manchester United might be one of the busiest Premier League clubs when the summer transfer market starts on June 10th, with Erik Ten Hag eager to complete deals.
Manchester United is expected to have a busy summer transfer window as new manager Erik ten Hag begins to rebuild his squad in preparation for the 2022/23 season.
The Red Devils had a terrible season, winning only three of their final nine games and finishing with their lowest Premier League points total ever (58). They missed out on Champions League football in the process, finishing sixth after a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on the penultimate day.
This means United will compete in the Europa League next season, and Ten Hag faces a monumental task in bringing the club back to the top of the league. A number of players have been linked with the Red Devils, and the former Ajax manager is eager to add to his squad as quickly as possible.
With Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, and Edinson Cavani all set to leave when their contracts expire, the Red Devils will need to make additional reinforcements to their team. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at the top five United targets and their current feelings about heading to Old Trafford.
De Jong, Frenkie
Ten Hag is anxious to reunite with the midfielder, and the Netherlands international has been linked with a move to Old Trafford. De Jong, on the other hand, appears to be content in Barcelona and wants to stay and compete for a spot alongside Spain's Gavi and Pedri.
He stated, " "I've already stated that Barcelona has been the club of my aspirations since I was a child. Of course, if other clubs call, I will answer. It's something that everyone does."
Timber from Jurrien
Last season, United conceded the most goals (57) of the Premier League's top seven teams, and Ten Hag aims to add at least one new centre-back to the Red Devils' defensive line. After working together at Ajax, Timber has been mentioned as a prospective transfer target, and the 20-year-old has not ruled out a move away from Amsterdam this summer.
He did, however, seem to imply that he would like to continue playing Champions League football, telling the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf: "Of sure, I can continue to improve there [with Ajax]. That is something I am certain of. I don't think I'm done with the club yet. However, I can also progress at other clubs.
"In the end, my gut instinct will be the deciding factor [in deciding whether or not to leave]." The image must be accurate. You could go to a large nightclub. It's preferable to stay with Ajax if you're not going to play there.
"Ajax is a big club as well." We compete in the Champions League, and I get the opportunity to play alongside some of the top players in the Netherlands. That's not insignificant."
Antony
Antony, another Ajax star, has been linked with Manchester United after scoring 12 goals in 33 games for the Dutch team last season. Liverpool are also interested in the Brazilian winger, and Antony,If the right offer came in, Antony would not say no to leaving the club.
According to De Telegraaf, he said: "Ajax is where I feel most at ease. But, of course, I occasionally consider the next move that will be taken. The English and Spanish tournaments are fantastic, in my opinion. I want to be able to play there when the time comes. When is it going to happen? Only God knows for sure."
Darwin Nunez
After another sensational season in Portugal, the highly sought-after Benfica forward is garnering interest from Arsenal, Newcastle, West Ham, and Manchester United this summer. Nunez won the Primeira Liga Golden Boot award after scoring 34 goals in 41 games across all competitions.
Darwin Nunez
Nunez, according to Sport, has already turned down a United offer. The Red Devils are apparently willing to spend £67.8 million for the Uruguayan, but he is not interested in moving to Old Trafford because he wants to play in the Champions League next season.
Phillips, Kalvin
In the transfer window, Ten Hag wants to add at least two new midfielders, ideally a defensive-minded anchorman and an attack-minded player. After impressing for club and country over the past two seasons, Leeds' Phillips has piqued United's interest in him to play in the deeper position.
Phillips, though, wants to stay in West Yorkshire because of the rivalry between the two clubs."I've made what I intend to accomplish plain," he said that Leeds in March. I've made it obvious what my intentions are. I want to stay at Leeds and will do so till my contract expires. I'm not particularly concerned about it.
"I've always been confident in my ability to organize it whenever it's needed." When you're an England international playing for one of the country's top clubs, there's always going to be a lot of noise, but I think I'll be happy at Leeds until the end of the season and always will be."
