The Ghana Police Service's letter to the British High Commissioner was defended by the Director of the Faculty of Academic Affairs & Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

Prof. Kwesi Aning said the letter was well-written and reflected the Police Administration's criticisms.

On Wednesday, June 1, he told JoySMS' presenter that the letter is "a good historical document from which others must learn."

As a consequence, Prof. Aning praised Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service, for taking such a courageous action.

"The IGP's letter to the British High Commissioner was well-written and direct, highlighting his concerns about the police's handling of a specific issue that tangentially impacts other situations."

Background

The Ghana Police Service responded to British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson's comments over the arrest of the FixTheCountry Movement's convener on Tuesday.

In a tweet on Tuesday, May 17, Madam Harriet Thompson expressed interest in seeing how the arrest of the FixTheCountry Movement's convener plays out.

"I believe that Oliver Barker Vormawor, the convener of the #FixTheCountry Movement, was detained again on his way to court for a traffic crime. "I'll be curious to see where this leads...," the tweet said.

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Inspector-General of Police

In a letter to Madam Harriet Thompson written by the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the police stated her tweet was made from a "biased or ignorant stance."

"Normally, the Ghana Police Service would not reply to statements like yours, which are clearly made from a prejudiced or misinformed perspective."

"However, we have learned from a prior sad experience that ignoring such incorrect, unjustified, and prejudiced opinions has not been beneficial."

The British High Commissioner's tweet, according to the letter, is a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

"Moreover, we regard your tweet as a breach of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which prohibits diplomatic missions from interfering in the domestic affairs of their host nation."
