PFA Player of the Year nominations include Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as three Liverpool players.The PFA has announced a six-man shortlist for their Players' Player of the Year award, with four previous winners among the names on the list.The Players' Player of the Year shortlist for the 2021/22 season has been announced by the Professional Footballers Association.
Liverpool forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah join Reds colleague Virgil van Dijk on the shortlist, making up half of the list. Jurgen Klopp's team won the FA Cup and the EFL Cup this season, but their season ended in disappointment when they lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid after losing the Premier League title to Manchester City on the final day.Kevin de Bruyne, Pep Guardiola's team's playmaker, is on the list; the Belgian international was City's star player as they won their fourth league title in five years. The 30-year-old wants to make history by becoming the first player to win the award three times in a row.Manchester United had their worst season in decades, finishing in sixth place, 11 points behind fifth-placed Arsenal and 35 points behind the title-winning pace. Cristiano Ronaldo, the club's renowned striker, is on the Players' Player of the Year shortlist after scoring 24 goals in all competitions, including 18 in the Premier League in his first season back at Old Trafford in 12 years.
Tottenham striker and England captain Harry Kane rounds out the list with 27 goals in all competitions. However, his 17 Premier League goals were his joint-lowest total in eight seasons as a member of the club's first-team squad.There were a few noteworthy omissions from the list, including Kane's striking partner Heung-Min Son, who scored 23 Premier League goals to share the Golden Boot with Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah. Tottenham's top-four position and return to the Champions League for next season were aided by goals from South Korean star Son.De Bruyne won the title for both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, and he's looking for a record-breaking third in a row, after Liverpool's Van Dijk and Salah triumphed in the 2019 and 2018 editions, respectively. Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer, and Mark Hughes are among a select group of Liverpool players who have won the award more than once.Ronaldo wants to become the first Manchester United player to win the trophy since Wayne Rooney won it in 2010 - the fourth year in a row that a United player had won it. United still holds the record for most awards (11), with Liverpool (8) in second place.
The awards event will take place on June 9th, and it will begin at 7 p.m.
