Is It A Big Blow For Liverpool To Miss Out On This Ligue 1 Midfielder?

According to a recent article on Goal.com, Liverpool will miss out on AS Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. The Reds have been mentioned as being second best to Real Madrid in the race to get the French midfielder.

The Impressive Form Of Tchouameni At The Stade Louis II

Tchouameni has been a breath of fresh air in French football this season, putting up a string of spectacular performances in the center of the park for Monaco. In 50 games for the French club this season, the 22-year-old has five goals and three assists across all fronts.

Based on his average of 2.5 tackles, 2.9 interceptions, 0.9 clearances, 1.6 shoots, 0.6 crucial passes, and 1.1 dribbles per game in Ligue 1, the Rouen native has been a steady performer at both ends of the play.

In top-flight football, he's even been neat with his ball distribution, completing 86.7 percent of his attempted passes (stats via whoscored).

Jurgen Klopp to Lose Tchouameni: A Big Blow?

Tchouameni is a hard-tackling midfielder who knows how to time his challenges to get the ball back for his team in the middle of the field. When necessary, he clears the danger and may make a couple quick sprints with the ball from midfield.

In the final third, the France international has scored and created his fair share of goals. He is, however, still pretty raw at 22, and will require time to develop into a top player at the highest level.

Missing out on a player of Tchouameni's caliber will be a major setback for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who needs to add some fresh blood to his midfield with James Milner approaching the end of his Anfield career.

Tchouameni would have been an excellent long-term replacement for Milner at the Merseyside club, as he checks all of Klopp's requirements for midfielders. When the summer transfer window reopens later this month, Liverpool will have little choice but to focus on some of their other recruitment targets.
