The dramatic events that saw Jose Mourinho withdraw Paul Pogba as a captaincy possibility during his time as Manchester United manager in 2018 have been revealed.
It has been reported that Manchester United players gave Paul Pogba WhatsApp voice notes in 2018 depicting Jose Mourinho hanging the Frenchman out to dry in a horrific betrayal at the club's Carrington training base.
Pogba returned to United for a second term in the summer of 2016, signing a club-record £89 million deal with Mourinho, but the midfielder has struggled to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.
Manchester United revealed on Wednesday, after months of speculation, that the mega-money washout was set to depart the club for nothing once more this summer — more than a decade after he initially walked out on United as a child.
After both the player and Manchester United acknowledged Pogba's official departure, a fresh article from The Athletic claims some inside details on one of the many big events that tormented Pogba during his hugely dismal second time in the Premier League.
The event in issue stemmed from his alleged spat with Mourinho in Autumn 2018, when the former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager decided that the midfielder – who served as United's'second captain' – would no longer be deemed a deputy for club captain Antonio Valencia.
Mourinho is said to have'strategically positioned' Pogba as someone who wanted to leave the club after instructing him to stay away from Carrington while he was injured. "Remember who I am," Mourinho is believed to have addressed the United team, referring to Pogba. Ask the Chelsea players — Nemanja [Matic] and Juan [Mata] – they are familiar with the real me. When a player wants to leave, he or she cannot be captain."
Pogba will depart Manchester United at the end of the month.
But, unbeknownst to Mourinho, some of his United teammates kept him in the loop, sharing details of the betrayal via WhatsApp. Pogba was later informed in a team meeting with his teammates that he would no longer be considered for the United leadership.
The feud between the two simmered until Mourinho was fired in December 2018, but Pogba's fortunes did not improve under his replacement, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Pogba's future has been the subject of much speculation in recent months, with a number of prominent European teams courting the midfielder as his Manchester United contract expires. Juventus, Pogba's former club, are the frontrunners to re-sign the midfielder,On his Instagram account, he wrote a parting message to United fans.
"I feel honoured to have played for this club," Pogba wrote on Instagram. Many great memories and moments, but most importantly, the fans' unwavering support. Manchester United, thank you."
