Following the arrest of three people linked to the whipping of two lovers on the forecourt of Wa Naa's palace, riots erupted in the Upper West Region's capital city.
Protesters thronged the Wa police station, asking that the three people arrested earlier be released.
In their desire for their demands to be granted, the enraged youngsters stopped roads, burned tyres, and threw stones at cops on duty while shouting.
The situation, according to the police, needed to be controlled before it worsened.
As a result, warning shots were fired to bring the situation under control.
The police announced that 18 people had been arrested as a result of the disturbance. It consisted of 16 guys and 2 ladies, according to ACP Reynold Manteaw of the Upper West Region Police Crime Unit.
He also mentioned that a manhunt has been launched to catch other people suspected of physically abusing the victims by flogging them.
On Tuesday, a video of lovers being canned went viral. They were allegedly flogged for photographing their sexual intercourse.
According to the young males, filming their sexual act was inappropriate.
As a result, they were penalized for ruining the town's name and indulging in an act that is prohibited by Islam. Bushran Khidiri, a 32-year-old phone repairer, was detained as a result. He is suspected of being one of the young guys that dragged the young woman in the leaked sex tape to Wa Naa's palace for whipping.
Issahaku Mahama, 70, and Naa Sidiki Mahama, 62, both farmers from Wa-Dobile, were detained afterwards.
According to reports, the two were apprehended and escorted to the Palace by several young guys in the town. The Wa Naa, however, was not there when they arrived at the Palace.
Instead than waiting for the Chief, the young men decided to take matters into their own hands and administer the punishment they saw suitable.
Each of the two victims received 20 lashes. Meanwhile, the police are still on the lookout for more perpetrators of the two victims' mistreatment.
