IS VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATION HALAL IN ISLAM?

Valentine’s Day is a jaahili Roman festival, which continued to be celebrated until after the Romans became Christian. This festival became connected with the saint known as Valentine who was sentenced to death on 14 February 270 CE. The kuffaar still celebrate this festival, during which immorality and evil such as sharing gift and greetings, kisses, romance and adultery are practised widely in the name of love.

The scholars have issued fatwas (lectures) stating that it is haraam to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked:

In recent times the celebration of Valentine’s Day has become widespread, especially among female students. It is a Christian festival where people dress completely in red, including clothes and shoes, and they exchange red flowers. We hope that you can explain the ruling on celebrating this festival, and what your advice is to Muslims with regard to such matters; may Allaah bless you and take care of you.

He replied:

Celebrating Valentine’s Day is not permissible for a number of reasons.

1- It is an innovated festival for which there is no basis in the Islamic religion.

2- It promotes immorality in the name of love

3- It calls for hearts to be preoccupied with foolish matters that are contrary to the way of the righteous salaf (may Allaah be pleased with them).

Therefore Allah said in the Glorious Qur’an

“And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart – about all those [one] will be questioned”.

(Q:17:36)

According to our beloved prophet as said he/who copied a given party belongs to them.

He also said;

mm AbdillaahAais

He who innovates something(like Valentine’s day celebration and others)in this matter of ours [i.e. Islaam] that is not of it will have it rejected [by Allaah]”.

This life is a trust of Allah by us. Rasulullah (Saw) said, ‘A person

Shall not be able to move from his place before Allah in the hereafter, until he reply to five

questions:

How did you spend your life?

How did you spend your youth?

Where did you earn your wealth from?

Where did you spend your wealth?

How much did you act upon your knowledge?

A person who is concerned of replying to these questions, how can he show

happiness upon the years of his life decreasing? Besides all this, Islam

does not permit waste. This is the reason that the poor of this Umma will

enter Jannat 500 years before the wealthy, because the wealthy will be

delayed by giving an account of their wealth. By spending on Valentine’s day gift or

parties, there is no benefit to Islam nor to the poor.

Conclusively, my brothers and sisters in Islam say NO TO VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATION for it is HARAM in religion of Islam.

May Allah give me and you the comprehension of the religion of Islam, Ameen.

Allah knows best.
