Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyeremanten both saw their favoured candidates in the ruling New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Western Regional Elections lose badly.
Dr. Bawumia's or Mr. Kyerematen's presidential bids were being pushed by the important failed candidates. However, they were soundly defeated in the elections, with Joe Ghartey, the NPP presidential candidate and former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, seeming to be the front-runner.
Dr. Bawumia's campaign in the Western Region is coordinated by Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed, who received 149 votes in the NPP's Western Regional Organizer Elections. Mr. Mohammed was defeated by Amoabeng Owusu Acheampong, who received 181 votes to win.
Dr. Bawumia's personal assistant, Charles Cobbina aka Kempis, who is pushing Dr. Bawumia's bid, lost the NPP Regional Secretary Elections in the Western Region, according to Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who is also a coordinator of Dr. Bawumia's presidential candidate Elections in the region. Kempis received 48 votes, compared to 196 votes for the eventual winner Okatakyie Amankwaa Afrifa.
James Obeng Jr., the Coordinator for the Minister of Food and Agriculture who previously coordinated for Alan Cash and was also accused of sharing money allegedly from Dr Bawumia with delegates, also lost miserably in the Regional 1st Vice Chairman elections, polling only 15 votes to Asafoakye Badu's 191 votes.
Emmanuel Acquah, who ran for the NPP's Western Regional Secretary job with claimed financial help from Alan Kyeremanten, was defeated as well. Only 57 people voted for him.
Al-Labib Imam Ali, Dr. Bawumia's chosen candidate, won the Western Regional Nasara elections.
The Western Regional NPP elections were clearly a contest between Hon. Ghartey, Dr. Bawumia, Mr. Kyeremanten, Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and it was apparent at the end of the day that Joe Ghartey stood tall.
The Western Region appears to be pushing for Hon. Ghartey to be the NPP's presidential candidate in 2024. Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party's Regional Chairman, Francis Ndede Siah, ran unchallenged.
