Johnny Depp And Amber Heard were previously married but unfortunately split in 2016.
Johnny Depp took to battle his ex-wife in court over an op-ed Heard wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, in which she described surviving domestic violence -- without mentioning Depp by name.
In the op-ed for The Washington Post, Amber Heard described herself as a "public figure representing domestic abuse" -- and although she did not name Depp in the piece, he sued her for implying he was an abuser, seeking $50 million in damages.
Though the case could have been easy to know who was winning, it took over six weeks on trial. Depp sued for $50 million in damages.
On Wednesday, 1 June, 2022, a US jury Wednesday found both Johnny Depp and his ex-wife, Amber Heard liable for defamation -- but sided more strongly with Deep following an intense trial riding on bitterly contested allegations of domestic abuse.
According to the jury, Amber Heard could not substantiate her allegations against Depp and that she knew her claims of abuse were false when she published her 2018 essay, and that Heard acted with malice when writing her op-ed.
While giving verdict, the jury awarded Johnny Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages in his defamation suit.
Amber Heard on the other hand had countersued for $100 million and said she was only violent with Depp in self-defense or defense of her younger sister.
Johnny Depp was also awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages in his defamation suit.
Amber Heard after the Jury’s verdict called it a "setback" for women.
Expressing her emotions in a statement, she said, “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I'm heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband," she said in a statement.”
"I'm even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women. It is a setback... It sets back the idea that violence against women is to be taken seriously," she added.
