The Ashanti and Eastern Regions were in the forefront last weekend when delegates voted to elect new leadership for the New Patriotic Party (NPP). A number of polls were conducted to determine the margin of victory in each areas.
However, not everyone in the Ashanti Region believed in the voting process.
The people voiced unhappiness with the procedure and final outcome of the election conducted on Saturday, May 28, 2022, shortly after the event.
Some believe the exercise was meant to favor the celebrated winner, who they believe has outlived his usefulness in the region's body politics.
Others believe that the winner, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, lacked ability for the chairmanship for which he was elected and is ill-equipped to represent the region's interests.
"We came all the way to support the party, even if some of us don't hold party cards," they told Purefmonline.com. From what we've seen so far, breaking the 8 will be extremely tough for the party. To be honest, the NPP right now needs a leadership change. From now until 2024, we have the option to reconsider our decision.
One too many 'yentie obia' attitudes are emerging. As you can see, the entire region is silent, including Kumasi, and this is the first sign of disappointment in many people's hearts, they claim.
Leaders of some identifiable groups who paid a solidarity visit to candidate Odeneho Kwaku Appiah at his home on Monday, May 30, also spoke, saying that people have enthusiastically and relentlessly contributed to the growth and development of the party in the region, 'only for one person to hijack the party.'
"We are certain that the people's will has been corrupted and that this election was organized in the interests of a few powerful persons, but we will show them the door in 2024."
"In due time, our concerns and all other appropriate actions will be made formal to the party," said several members of the 4 candidates' campaign team who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
