President Macky Sall of Senegal talks at the United Nations General Assembly's 76th session General Debate on September 24, 2021, in UN General Assembly Hall at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, New York, United States.

In the Russian city of Sochi, African Union chairperson and Senegalese President Macky Sall, as well as AU Commission chair Moussa Faki Mahamat, were greeted warmly. Even President Vladimir Putin's long table, which depicts Russia's and Africa's close ties, is missing.

As AU leaders met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to find a solution to the Russia-Ukraine crisis, there are high expectations. Several African countries are facing the effects of rising food costs, rising energy prices, and a difficult financial climate.

"I went to the AU bureau, where we discussed our positions and participated in the discussion, and we recommended that he visit Russia and Ukraine. President Cyril Ramaphosa said, "We have access to both leaders to create communication, and we will approach these discussions expecting to make an influence."

The question is whether Africa can play a role in achieving a ceasefire in the raging conflict. This is especially true given the continent's long history with Moscow.

Some African countries voted negative in a UN vote condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine and have resisted requests to condemn Russia.

To punish Moscow, the European Union has pursued sanctions forcefully and effectively severed economic ties.

"You've seen the results of the various votes at the United Nations. Despite immense pressure, the bulk of African countries have refrained from denouncing these situations," says AU Chair and Senegalese President Macky Sall.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia claims that relations between the continent and the Kremlin are excellent.

"Our country, Russia, has always been on Africa's side, and we have always backed Africa in its fight against colonialism," Putin continues.

He believes that Africa has great potential, and that they would continue to strengthen their ties in order to enhance economic cooperation and other sectors.
