Man United are looking for a new centre-back, and Matthijs de Ligt had a successful spell at Ajax alongside Erik ten Hag.

At a press conference, Matthijs de Ligt.

Matthijs de Ligt has reacted to speculations connecting him to a Manchester United transfer.

De Ligt made his name at Ajax under Erik ten Hag's supervision, and he helped the Dutch giants reach the 2018/19 Champions League semi-finals. Following that outstanding season, De Ligt joined Juventus in the summer of 2019.

However, the centre-transfer back's to Turin has coincided with Juventus' downfall. De Ligt won the Scudetto in his debut season at Juventus, but the Italian champions have now gone two seasons without winning the league, finishing fourth for the past two seasons.

De Ligt's future at the club has been called into question as a result, and he was questioned if he could leave Juventus this weekend. In response to a question about a move to United, the Dutchman has said that he considers the'sporting project' of clubs.

"I'm in talks with Juventus right now," De Ligt told NOS.

"Right now, I'm focused on how I perform on the field; when the time comes, I'll decide whether to prolong or look deeper."

"I take a look at the athletic project. Juventus understands that finishing fourth for the second year in a row is not good enough. As a result, as Juventus, we must take action. I'm a Juventus player, so that's all I'm thinking about."

De Ligt's Juventus contract runs out in the summer of 2024.

In fact, L'Equipe reported just a week ago that the Monaco star was bent on a move to Anfield.

Then, according to RMC Sport, a French publication, Tchouameni notified Liverpool directly that he wanted to join them.

A move to Merseyside appeared to be a distinct possibility, despite conflicting rumours from other publications claiming Real Madrid to be the frontrunner in the hunt for his signature.

And, unfortunately for Jurgen Klopp, it appears that the Spanish giants may be after him.

According to Spanish journalist Mario Cortegana, the player has already informed his teammates that he will be playing at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, adding that Liverpool has withdrawn their interest.

"The priority is Real Madrid," Cortegana remarked. That's exactly what he said.

Furthermore, RMC Sport has alleged in recent days that the Primera Division champions had won the race in a £70 million deal.

If Klopp does not sign a defensive midfielder, it will not be a tragedy.

Remember, the Reds still have Fabinho in their ranks, and with the big Brazilian still 28 years old, upgrading that position isn't a high priority.

But it's apparent that Liverpool decided it was preferable to sign the player now rather than wait a year or two to find a long-term replacement for Fabinho, who appears to be heading to Madrid.
