Finalissima: Neymar mocks Messi, others over celebrations
Brazil forward, Neymar Jr, has mocked Argentina for their celebrations after winning the Cup of Champions at Wembley. Neymar’s PSG teammate, Lionel Messi, put in a fine display as they beat Italy 3-0 on Wednesday to win this year’s Finalissima. It was their second title in the space of 11 months. The Albiceleste had defeated Brazil 1-0 last year in the Copa America final to win their first major title since 1993. Photographs of Argentina’s dressing room celebrations went viral on social media and Neymar posted a comment under one Instagram post ironically asking if Argentina had won the World Cup. He wrote: “Did they win the World Cup?” Neymar’s comment comes after Argentina international Nicolas Otamendi shared a clip of his teammates singing a song dedicated to neighbours Brazil, reminding them of their Copa America final defeat. “Brasilero, what happened? [Argentina captain Lionel] Messi went to Rio [de Janeiro] and got the Copa [America],” the song goes. Last year, Brazil’s players made fun of Argentina following their elimination from the football competition at the Olympic Games.
Neymar takes aim at Lionel Messi and Argentina as bitter rivalry ensues for World Cup
Neymar has taken a swipe at Argentina and PSG club mate Lionel Messi following their victory in the Finalissima at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday. Messi inspired his country to a 3-0 win over European Champions Italy, with goals from Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala separating the two sides on the night, though Messi was named man of the match after providing two assists. It's just the second trophy that Argentina have managed to get their hands on in 29 years, and despite the game having a bit of a pre-season feel to it, the players made the most of a rare moment of triumph. "Have they won the World Cup?" Neymar posted sarcastically on Instagram. Brazil's rivalry with Argentina is as old as football itself and is steeped in tension and fierce competitiveness, so it's little surprise to see the talisman of the Seleção throwing pot-shots their neighbour's way, but the fact that his teammate - and by all accounts close personal friend - Messi was at the centre of all the jubilation has raised a few eyebrows. Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez insists Argentina will be "one of the favourites" in Qatar, despite their underwhelming performance four years ago in Russia, because they have Messi in their side. Messi meanwhile has hinted that he will retire from international football at the end of the year, regardless of how he gets on in Qatar. "After the World Cup, I don’t know, I’m going to have to rethink a lot of things. Surely many things will change." Read More Related Articles Read More Related Articles
