Born Samuel Adu Frimpong, Medikal or MDK is a Ghanaian Hip hop artiste, songwriter, and entrepreneur.
Medikal is the reigning 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards rapper of the year.
He owns AMG Beyond Kontrol label — an affiliate of Arab Money Gang (AMG) Business owned by rapper, Criss Waddle. His signature tune in all his songs is simply “B⊃ Me Din Ma Me” which translates as “Say My Name For Me” and now, it is “Don’t Say My Name For Me”.Samuel Adu Frimpong aka Medikal was born on Sunday, April 4th, 1993.
The Ghanaian hip hop artiste celebrated his 29th birthday some months ago and will be 30 years come 2022.Medikal was born to Madam Portia Lamptey and Mr. James Frimpong in Sowutuom, Ghana.
The AMG Business star is a proud son of Sowutuom which is a suburb of Accra and that is his official hometown.
His mother, Mrs Portia Lamptey had it tough in his upbringing because she wanted him to be a qualified “Medical Doctor” and not “Medikal Rapper“.
She recounts how difficult it was in making Medikal concentrate on his studies at school and sometimes had to beat him but the ‘stubborn’ Medikal kept on rapping and rapping, and just rapping! The ‘Omo Ada’ rapper first attended St John’s Grammar Senior High School in Accra but was sacked due to his strong desire in becoming a rapper.
According to his mother, Mrs Portia Lamptey, who spoke with DJ Andy Dosty in a phone interview on Hitz FM, Medikal was expelled from school because a lot of the boys had taken after him and wanted to become rappers which was disrupting academic activities on campus.Medikal was then moved to the Odorgonno Senior High School also in Accra where he was once again sacked for the same reason.
His mother, however, made a timely intervention this time around by sweeping the school’s compound just to convince the headmaster to take Medikal back.He began his career sometime in 2008 and at an early age rapping about doctors, surgeons, medicals and hospital facilities in general which earned him the stage name “Medikal”.
Medikal has always said his rap needs ‘medical attention’ not because his rap lines are ‘sick’ or unhealthy but because they are very creative, and the best of all.
He had his stage name bestowed on him by his school father when he was in Senior High School.
In 2010, rapper Criss Waddle signed Medikal to his Arab Money Gang (AMG) Business record label paving the way for him to become who he is today.
In 2018, the AMG signed artiste had the opportunity to grace the popular Tim Westwood‘s Show.
Medikal Albums
So far, Medikal has these albums to his credit:
Medikation (2013)

Medikal has acquired a number of expensive and luxurious cars customizing the number plates of some of them.
In 2016, he bought a Mercedes-Benz C 300 4matic with a customized number plate as “MDK-1-16” of which he has promised to gift away to one of his loyal fans when the deadly Coronavirus (COVID-19) menace is all over and life returned to normalcy.
The other cars he owns include a Range Rover and Chevrolet Camaro.
Medikal and Fella Makafui were spotted standing on each car (Range Rover & Chevrolet Camaro) in a photo posted on Twitter by Fella.
She captioned it: “Sowutuom Jay Z & Kpando Beyonce”.After Medikal won the Best Rapper Award at the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, he stoked controversy by saying that he saved rap music from dying in Ghana some 4 years ago.
The ‘Omo Ada’ hit-maker continued that since 2015, he has been the only rap soldier who has been holding the rap game down in Ghana.
That assertion by Medikal didn’t go down well with some Ghanaian rappers including Strongman.
The two — Medikal & Strongman — started ‘dissing’ and ‘beefing’ each other lyrically which set the entertainment industry in Ghana on fire.
They later settled their ‘beef’ amicably by collaborating on a single track titled “Bossu”.Since joining AMG Business Group, Medikal has worked with Criss Waddle on his “P3 kakra”, Bisa Kdei on his “forever my love”.
Medikal teamed with Davido in 2019 to produce the track with the title “Father“
He has released hit songs like “Anthem” and “Confirm” which has Sarkodie featured on the remix version.
On the “free me” track, Medikal again featured Sarkodie, Mr.Eazi, and Cris Waddle.
He also worked with the 2016 Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the year, E.L on his mixtape, “B.A.R III: Lomi Era“.
